Communicating (But Not in Words)

The Power of Leading by Example: Communication Beyond Words

“What we do in life, echoes in eternity.”

This iconic line from Gladiator might sound grandiose, but it carries a truth that applies powerfully to leadership and communication—especially in today’s complex, hybrid-working world. While I wouldn’t claim every action has eternal consequence, I do believe this: what we do often communicates far more effectively than what we say.

In the context of presentation skills, communication skills, and effective leadership, this insight is critical: actions create lasting impact. Especially when words alone aren’t enough.

Why Action Is the Ultimate Communication Skill
One of the best examples of action-led communication I’ve seen in recent years is Joe Wicks, also known as The Body Coach. Through the pandemic, he helped transform how thousands of children in the UK think about physical and mental health. Not by talking at them—but by showing up, daily, with energy and commitment.

I’ve seen the results in my own home. Over the last two years, both of my teenage sons have become more aware of how they eat, how often they exercise, and how those choices affect their wellbeing. They’ve improved their fitness, lost weight, and adopted healthier routines.

And they didn’t do it because I told them to—they did it because I showed them. I committed to doing the daily workouts myself. No speeches. No lectures. Just consistent action.

This is the very essence of people skills and communication: consistency, authenticity, and leading by example.

Leadership and Management Skills Are Communicated Non-Verbally
In business, the same principle applies. Whether you’re managing a team or delivering a public speaking engagement, people notice more than just your words. They observe your consistency, your confidence, your ability to deliver.

That’s why great leaders—especially in remote presenting environments—must rely on more than just verbal cues. Your presentation skills, your tone, your posture, and your willingness to lead by example all send powerful messages.

For example:

Showing up prepared reinforces trust
Practising what you preach builds credibility
Speaking with clarity and calm under pressure builds influence
These are core management skills that go beyond theory. They are lived, practiced, and communicated every day.

PowerPoint Training and the Art of Visual Integrity
Even in PowerPoint training, leading by example matters. When your slides are clean, your visuals aligned, and your narrative focused, you demonstrate respect for your audience and your message. You’re not just teaching with your mouth—you’re presenting with your whole presence.

Whether you're running in-person sessions or engaging in remote presenting, consistency in your visual and verbal message builds trust.

How Are You Leading?
The takeaway here is simple: the way you behave communicates more than you think. Your presenting skills, your day-to-day business skills, and your interactions all send a message—even when you’re not speaking.

So ask yourself:

Are you modelling the behaviours you want to see in others?
Do your actions reinforce your communication goals?
What skills—whether in communication, presentation, or leadership—could you develop to positively influence those around you?
