Lesley's Story
Lesley didn’t realise she was doing a lot of things well. They only thing she needed to add was more time to allow her ideas to settle in the minds of people she was wanting to influence.

Part of how I train is to focus on the things which people naturally do well, highlight them, and see if they can't be used in different contexts. British culture is not very good at this which is why people can find it so difficult to develop in their jobs in this country as they are very rarely told what is working, only what is not working.

Lesley was good at adapting to the needs of different personalities, working from their perspective and fantastic at her choice of phrasing. What she didn't realise was influencing takes time and that for her skills to work, she needed to allow that.

It's not that uncommon for people not to realise the importance of timing. In all the work I do, three factors pop up so frequently, that if you solely focused on them, the pay-off would be great. The first is emotional management, the second is adaptability and the third, timing! We all know it's important, we just don't give it enough respect.
